Seasons For Growth

Strengthens the social and emotional wellbeing of young people (aged 13-18 years) and adults who have experienced significant change or loss in their lives. Builds resilience to help adolescents and adults adapt to change, loss and grief. The program provides a safe learning environment for young people where they can give voice to their experiences, understand and befriend their feelings, learn skills that help them adapt, develop friendships, and recognise ‘I’m not the only one’.

Tree of Life

Is a hopeful and inspiring approach to working with tweens, adolescents and adults who have experienced hard times. This approach enables people to speak about their lives in ways that make them stronger. It involves people drawing their own ‘tree of life’ in which they get to speak of their ‘roots’ (where they come from), their skills and knowledges, their hopes and dreams, as well as the special people in their lives. The participants then join their trees into a ‘forest of life’ and, in groups, discuss some of the ‘storms’ that affect their lives and ways that they respond to these storms, protect themselves, and each other. The Tree of Life enables people to speak about their lives in ways that are not retraumatising, but instead strengthens their relationships with their own history, their culture, and significant people in their lives.

ACT art therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy art-based group program.

This program will help you clarify what is important to you, and what your life values are. We teach you how to use knowledge to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your thinking and change your life.

We have found that ACT is a powerful therapeutic intervention for everything from work stress to depression. It is an effective tool to increase emotional intelligence, allowing us to embrace our emotions without letting them control us.

Further, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy creates a mental state of awareness, focus and openness. As such, it allows you to full engage with the moment. This form of “pure awareness” allows us to engage objectively with our thoughts and emotions. By doing so, we can distance ourselves from negative emotions, thoughts and feelings that would generally interrupt our day-to-day lives.

DBT intensive & long term group work

DBT is a comprehensive treatment program for adults and adolescents with complex problems.

Originally designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), it can also be used to treat other conditions:

  • suicidal behaviour

  • self-harm

  • substance use

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • depression

  • eating disorders

The two core treatment aspects are skills group and individual therapy. The program also includes phone coaching appointments and regular texts. Telephone coaching from your therapist can be available at scheduled times during the week. Your therapist guides you and encourages you to apply your new DBT skills to address and manage your issues.

Running at the same time as the group, individual therapy typically occurs weekly to enhance your motivation and commitment to the program. It’s also an opportunity to discuss and apply specific DBT skills to your current everyday life. The DBT skills group is aimed at helping people learn the core DBT coping skills that will allow them to manage their emotions, actions and thoughts effectively. In this program, clients are not required to focus in in-depth exploration and analysis of the person's personalty and history. Instead we focus on what is happening now, and how to develop ways of responding differently and effectively.

Of the four core skills, people will learn:

  • Distress Tolerance

  • Emotional Regulation

  • Mindfulness

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

Distress tolerance skills:

help people to withstand and overcome strong emotions and urges.

They are central to managing problems such as drug and alcohol use, self-harm, suicidal urges and so on.

Emotional regulation skills:

help the person develop a more effective and liveable emotional world.

The skills build emotional awareness and resilience, and help reduce vulnerability to problematic emotions.

Mindfulness:

helps people to be more aware of, and engage more effectively with, their inner world. Through mindfulness people learn to step back and not get so caught up in unhelpful thoughts and feelings.

Interpersonal Effectiveness:

is about learning assertiveness strategies to appropriately ask for what you want or need. Learning how to say no, and how to manage interpersonal conflict in a way that maintains respect for yourself and others.
