Play Therapy for Adults and Adolescents
"It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult
is able to be creative and to use the whole personality,
and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self"

Play Therapy is a powerful therapy for adults and adolescents. There is growing research from the fields of neurophysiology and molecular biology that supports play therapy as a valid therapeutic technique for past childhood trauma/s. According to Sueann Kenney-Noziska (2010) “Play therapy approaches often create a sense of safety from which some adults may be more comfortable approaching threatening issues or topics".

Play Therapy provides adults and adolescents with an appropriate avenue to safely examine their thoughts, feelings, sensorisomatic sensations/memories and issues through a variety of play such as body play, dream play, nurture play, fantasy play, creative play, and storytelling.

For adults, play fosters numerous adaptive behaviours including creativity, role rehearsal, and mind-body integration.

Understandably, some adults may feel embarrassed. This type of therapy can only commence if a significant therapeutic alliance as been built on mutual trust.  Some adults may not prefer this creative approach due to their logical, dominant side of the brain. Perhaps Sandplay Therapy or Guided Drawing would be a more comfortable fit.

Play Therapy may be appropriate for the treatment of:

  • grief and loss

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • domestic / family violence

  • post-traumatic stress disorder

  • obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • arrested emotional development
