About Me

"People start to heal the moment they feel heard"

Cheryl Richardson

Background and Experience

Other than launching Rise and Shine Counselling & Play Therapy Wodonga and completing a sensorimotor (mind-body-feeling) art therapy approach healing trauma through Guided Drawing late 2019,  I recently completed EMDR studies at The Bouverie Centre, Melbourne.

I'm presently awaiting accreditation with the AASW as a Mental Health Social Worker which will allow me to provide counselling under MediCare.

I'm also working towards my clinical membership and registration as a Play Therapist.

For a comprehensive understanding of these credentials, please refer to the Australian Association of Social work and the Australian Association of Play Therapy:-

I hold a counselling position elsewhere at a Wodonga agency as a Family Violence and Homelessness Counsellor receiving referrals from the Department of Health and Human Services (Child Protection), Centre Against Violence, community health and family services, schools, kindergartens, pediatricians, psychologists, mandated Court orders, and self referrals.

I have clocked up 8 years working full-time as a child and adolescent counsellor. In this time I have:-

  • exceeded 3,400 counselling sessions

  • planned several group work programs

  • facilitated over 40 groups

  • outreached to 29 learning centres throughout Wodonga and surrounding regions including Benalla,

Wangaratta, Chiltern, Wahgunyah, Mt. Beauty, Harrietville , Albury and Gerogery NSW.

  • consulted with countless parents, teachers and other professionals

  • liaised with Independent Children's Lawyers

  • provided advocacy, referrals, and support letters

  • provided recommendations to parents and teachers

  • and received consistent clinical supervision from specialists in their respective fields

I recently took up a new position as  an  Adult Family Violence Therapeutic Counsellor with the same agency. The role is funded by the Australian Childhood Foundation and I'm working collaboratively with the local ACF team.

I'm looking forward to undertaking Synergetic Play Therapy and possibly Filial Therapy in the near future.

I can support NDIS clients who are self managed, plan managed or have a combination of both.

I am registered with four national EAP service agencies.

I am working towards becoming a registered Medicare service provider.

Areas of Expertise

Children & Teens:

My expertise is in working with children.

With children I work around areas of developmental change, puberty, growing up, developing a secure sense of identity and working with family and other significant relationships. I often focus on building resilience and self-esteem as a way of tackling not only issues young people are currently facing, but also enabling them to manage tough times in the future.

Feedback from parents and children consistently comes back that I have outstanding  rapport building skills. Young people quickly become at ease and enjoy coming to counselling.

I can make children's sessions fun AND effective. I help them to understand what’s happening and why they’re reacting to the situation that is causing them difficulty. I teach them practical coping skills for managing the things they can’t change. I ensure that parents know what’s happening in the counselling room (and more if consent is provided by the child) and also help parents with things they can do at home to help their child. A happier child is a happier parent.

Young Adults - 18 to 24 years:

I have an emerging interest in the wellbeing of young adults. Understandably it is a period of significant transition. Psychotherapies such as Sandplay Therapy, Guided Drawing, and Walk & Talk Therapy are available, as are groupwork programs.
